Re-Imagine Your City With Energy Positive Intelligent Lighting. How would this apply to an office setting?


Up to three winners who best meet the evaluation criteria will receive an initial cash prize of $10,000USD (from a total prize pool of $30,000 USD). In addition, up to three entrants may have the opportunity to collaborate with the GE Lighting EMEA team regarding further refinement of their concepts by entering into a mutually agreeable business relationship, which may include an internship or virtual consultancy position.

Propose a solution for the intelligent lighting system that connects, monitors, analyzes and optimizes its surrounding within an office environment. Your submission ("Entry") should serve as an introduction and high-level overview for your idea for a smart, complete lighting system at optimizes an office environment. Appropriate responses will address the following:

  • How does your smart lighting system concept improve productivity? What cool features does it have? What is it sensing? Describe what is different about this new office lighting system, what it does and measures, how this system helps to improve productivity of the office and its employees.
  • What does it look like? Where are the sensors placed in the luminaires? Which types of sensors are used in the system? How are the sensors connected to existing luminaire portfolio of GE Lighting?Create a sketch or drawing of the placement of the sensors inside the complete lighting unit. How does this specific placement of the sensors allow them to accurately sense and measure each element? Which type of lights are the best choices for sensor integrations?
  • How does it connect with the cloud to share data? How do the luminaires communicate with each other? Create a sketch (or include the same one) that shows how this single office lighting system could connect with the cloud. This sketch should show/explain the flow of data as it communicates between the system components.
  • How does it work with and optimize the building’s other utilities? Describe how the lighting system optimizes the building as a whole by connecting with the central building control module (controls heat, air conditioning, etc.). How does this lighting system make the building better as a whole?
  • Is there a market for your smart lighting system? Who’s the customer? What’s the value prop? Describe your idea of how your smart lighting system could be commercialized. Showcase a viable business model for your system (paying special attention for value proposition and customer segments).

Big data and smart technology are intersecting everywhere - from a wristband that tracks your health or an app that lets you remotely control your home. But how can these functions translate to an office environment? Can the building where we work be as smart as our phones and computers?

Lighting accounts for one of the largest portions of energy consumption in a commercial environment - and yet light systems are often overlooked given their physical placement. But in a new era dedicated to the development of economically sustainable solutions - these systems present a great opportunity. How can we harness the power of data to fuel our energy needs? An intelligent lighting system, coupled with sensors and software, can not only provide unprecedented efficiency and utility - but has the unique position to offer a personalized experience to those it surrounds.
